The history of Kasteel de Wittenburg begins in the spring of 1899, when squire Helenus Marinus Speelman bought the piece of land and built a country house there.

The castle was designed by architect J.J. van Nieukerken, whose responsibilities included the design of the Academic Hospital in Groningen. Jonkheer Speelman had a special vision for the construction: several times the construction was stopped and parts of the castle were demolished and modified. In 1901, construction of Kasteel de Wittenburg was finally complete. Unfortunately, the squire himself could not enjoy his long-awaited country home for long: he died in 1910.

In late 1963, Kasteel de Wittenburg opened its doors to guests. The monumental historic building has hardly changed over the years. The old, calm atmosphere of the past has been brought together with modern times. Meanwhile, the castle with its extensive collection of rooms is the reception center for business and for members of Association International Reception Center of Business de Wittenburg.

It is known as a unique event venue and as a place with its own programming around events and concerts. In addition to business occasions, the rooms are rented for anniversaries, reunions, weddings and farewell events.
